CONVERTING WASTE TO WEALTH 1.0 (FOCUS: PLASTICS)

Efficiency Driven Manufacturing Initiative (EfficiencyDMI) presents to you a Virtual Pitching contest with the Theme; CONVERTING WASTE TO WEALTH: FOCUS ON PLASTICS which aims to identify and support top start-ups and various students of higher Institutions as well as creative innovators in Nigeria driving the plastic manufacturing industry transformation to monetize plastic wastes to wealth. The Pitching contest aligns with EfficiencyDMI goals which include bridging the gap between Industry and academia as well as supporting the United Nation’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) 12 and 13.

The converting waste to wealth pitching contest is open to start-ups, young professionals, and students of various higher institutions as well as creative innovators in Nigeria.

The fundamental goal of the pitching contest is to identify and promote innovations that will help the plastic manufacturing industries to:

Enhance Plastics:

Solutions in the form of materials or technologies that provide the possibility to make partial or complete recyclable plastics.

Substitute Plastics:

Solutions that can be used in place of plastic materials in some specific sectors or areas of application.

Recycle and Reuse Plastics

Solutions that promote the conversion of plastics waste to something that will improve creativity and innovation, and in turn, generate wealth.

Reduce Waste:

Solutions that will minimize land and water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Eligibility Criteria:

● Applicants must reside in Nigeria, an innovator wanting to start a business in the plastic industry, and fulfill any of the below requirements.

➢ An undergraduate/undergraduates of any higher institution of learning
➢ Young professional(s) consisting of recent graduates
➢ Creative innovators

● Applicants must be able to show evidence of their existing idea already being implemented

● Applicants' ideas must be in line with the focus (plastics) pitching topic

● Applicants can apply as an individual or as a team



CONTEST PHASES Phase 1 – Application Phase (5 Point)

● Applicants are expected to upload a 2-minute (max) video pitching their ideas

➢ Applicant should proceed to the EfficiecnyDMI website, create a profile account via the “No Account Yet? Click here to register” link and then proceed with register their entry

➢ Video should be uploaded by applicant(s) on their various platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter) where the presence of EfficiencyDMI exists. All entries should include the EfficiencyDMI hash (#)tags; #EfficiencyDMI #EfficiencyDMI_JPI #EfficiencyDMI_WasteToWealth_Plastics #TheMostEfficientSolutionWins

➢ Applicants who do not have an account with any of the above listed platforms should send an email to support@efficiencydmi.com with the subject Request for Personal Applicant Google Drive Folder for the “Topic of the pitching contest”. Upon receipt of the email, applicant(s) will receive a personally created applicant google drive folder link where they are expected to upload their entry.

● For phase 1, applicants’ entry video is expected to briefly communicate the

➢ Applicant (individual/team) name, and title of project

➢ Design concept of the proposed solution

➢ Economic and environmental impact of the proposed solution and the sustainability

➢ Estimated cost of product, if any

➢ Level of applied modern technological concept compared to what is obtainable in the 21st century around the world among others deal fit by the applicant.



***Applicants submitting their entry as a team could consider the below suggestions***

● An ideal EfficiencyDMI applicant team should be

➢ Ethnically balance or consist of cultural diversity, that is, consist of people from different ethnic groups if possible.

➢ Team members should have different discipline (course of study) as this could further enhance their proposed solution or idea being proposed.

➢ Team members could be from different higher institutions of learning intra or inter-state.



Phase 2 – Evaluation and Shortlisting Phase (10 Point)

● Shortlisted candidate will be published at the end of phase 1.

Phase 3 – Submission of Business Plan (+5 Point), Design Concept, Technological Advancement and Application, and Ergonomics, and Sustainability (40 Point) – 45 Point

Applicants should upload a 5-minute (max.) video pitching the Design concept, Technological advancement and application, and Ergonomics of the proposed solution and with the hash (#) tags listed earlier.

Applicant video is expected to communicate the

➢Design concept of the proposed solution

➢CAD drawings if available

➢Economic and environmental impact of the proposed solution

➢Estimated cost of product if any

➢Level of applied modern technological concept compared to what is obtainable in the 21st century around the world among others deal fit by the applicant.

➢Feasibility Study

➢Sustainability plan

➢End of life plan of proposed solution if applicable

Phase 4 – Overview of the Proposed Solution, End Product, and Sustainability (35 Point)

Live (online) event via ZOOM with panelists and to be broadcast live via EfficiencyDMI YouTube channel.

Applicant(s) is/are expected to communicate

➢The benefits and value of the end/prospective end product/solution to the industry and end-users

➢The features of the end/prospective end product/solution

➢Climate change impact

Phase 5 – Obtain Point of Extra Activities (5 Point)

Contestant(s) engagement during the contest

Hint:

Contestants’ videos will be uploaded on all EfficiencyDMI platforms.

➢Comment on contestant(s) published videos on the EfficiencyDMI official platforms and/or

➢Physical on campus activities

Prizes:

The winner with the most efficient solution takes it all.

➢EfficiencyDMI will support the winner with a sum of #250,000 for covering start-up administrative costs.

➢Free 3 months mentorship and consultation.

SUSTAINABLE ROOTS-TRANSFORMING CHALLENGES INTO SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS (JPI 2.0)

Efficiency Driven Manufacturing Initiative (EfficiencyDMI) presents to you a Virtual Pitching contest Just Pitch It (JPI 2.0) with the Theme; Sustainable Roots-Transforming Challenges into Sustainable Solutions.
The Pitching contest aligns with EfficiencyDMI goals which include bridging the gap between Industry and academia as well as supporting the United Nation's sustainable development goals (SDGs) 4, 9, 12, and 13.
The 2024 edition of JPI will be centered on examining how participants manage localizing their supply chain and use of Raw Materials, predominantly it would be structured around innovative solutions with locally sourced materials.
The JPI 2.0 pitching contest is open to start-ups, young professionals, and students of various higher institutions as well as creative innovators in Nigeria.

Eligibility Criteria:
● Applicants must reside in Nigeria, be a creative innovator with a business/product sample made from raw materials found/sourced in Nigeria, and fulfill any of the below requirements;
➢ An undergraduate/undergraduates of any higher institution of learning
➢ Young professional(s)
➢ Creative innovators
● Applicants must be able to show evidence of the source of their products as well as their existing idea already being implemented.
● Applicants' ideas must be in line with the focus (raw materials) and must be able to show evidence of product efficacy/durability.
● Applicants' products must be eco-friendly from extraction to finished production.
● Applicants can apply as an individual or as a team.

Contest Phases
The competition is segmented into 4 phases with a total of 100 points accruable upon completion. Each phase would be judged based on key criteria which include:
● Identification of challenges
● Solution Proposal
● Feasibility and Impact
● Presentation
Each phase will be elaborated on below, alongside requirements to earn full points based on the set criteria. Participants are encouraged to ensure that instructions attached to each phase are thoroughly adhered to and carried out with utmost attention to detail to earn points that would earn them a spot in the next round.

Phase 1 – Application Phase (10 points)

➢ Participants applying as a team are expected to create an account and submit their application as a team using the details of the team lead.
